Having been raised in America’s deep south, I have an instinctive horror of men with robes and pointed hoods. And that goes double if I’ve seen them (or people resembling them) in Goya’s ghastly Inquisition scenes.
But here I have set aside that prejudice to paint another scene from Spain. Again, my inspiration was the work of the multi-talented Laura B. Fernandez.
These gentlemen are Nazarenos, members of a brotherhood of Catholic worshippers who march in the annual pre-Easter processions in Seville. Obviously there is no procession here, so maybe they overslept and missed it.
