Wink New and curious sculptor

Hi All!!

This is my second time with Art Span. I will admit that I am using the website to archive work. Some actually came from ancient slides and I was just curious what some of you might think of the scanning I did of old photos/slides. I hope to start working again when I finish a small studio (sculpture eats space). Never been commercially successful but wouldn't mind now (of course). www.patrickharrisart.com

Welcome back to Artspan!

Please tell us more about the fiber cement you use.

Would that hold up well in a Northern Climate like the Upper Peninsula of Michigan?

The newest works are wood core with epoxy resin encapsulated and styrofoam. It is the only way I found to have exterior works that would be permanent

Default Fiberglass sculpture

The sculpture I am working on are exterior. The fiber cement is called "design cast" I have worked with the product for almost 20 years. The process is not complicated and yes it can withstand anything metal can. It needs to be anchored and winds exceeding 160mp could cause damage (unlike stone and metal). I learned this out of necessity because I did not want to weld and wanted to make constructions. I'm happy with the process and want to teach others.

Have you tried embedding bolts (in sufficient number and strength) that anchor the sculpture to the base pedestal ?

For embedding, you can use the same fiber cement, or portland cement mixed with sand.

I don't think my winds are ever that strong here but what I'd be concerned about is water freezing and causing cracking.
