Shoot! I'd be happy just to win that gold
I wouldn't turn down the mansion either.
I hope everything is going well with the house hunting.
I'm not sure I understand about the water situation with the one house. Is it just a big tank full of water you have to share? Where does the water come from? I'm sorry if I sound like an idiot but I'm just use to turning on the faucet and water comes out. Is there a shortage of fresh water where you live Des?

Most country towns in Australia have a town water treatment plant that purifies water from rivers and ocassionally wells. Deep narrow wells here are called bores. Water from these deep bores can be quite hot as well as "hard" (salty) . One town I visited had hot and cooled bore water on tap.

Isolated homesteads and homes that have no "town" water supply (like my home town when I was a kid ) have a tank that collects rain falling off the house roof. You have to make sure the gutters are clean no leaves etc. The down pipe runs down to a hole covered by a screen in the top of the tank. Before detergents replaced soap, tank water was sometimes prefered to well water for washing clothes as well as for drinking. The more affluent had water softeners.

With the Traveston Dam stopped, the Queensland Government is going to build more desalination plants to process sea water for the rapidly growing population in south east Queeensland.

Australia is generally a rather dry place with iregular falls of rain. South East Queensland has had a very dry period the last few years. Few cyclones (hurricanes) coming south down the coast to bring rain as in former uears.

With Toowoomba's dam still down to less than 10% full we were pleased to hear today that the pipeline from the Wivenhoe Dam nearer the coast had been completed, though it will still be a month or so till that water is flowing into Toowoomba homes.
Hope this makes sense.

Des

Holy Cow! I had no idea it was like that in Australia!

I guess I have taken my fresh water supply for granted... I will be more grateful for it from now on.

I remember when we talked about that Des (back in the AR days?) and was horrified that you had such short water supplies. I'm surprised that given how serious the shortages are that a dam was stopped, but without the rainfall, I guess there wouldn't be much to cache in the first place. I hope the desalinization plants get up and running for you.

We used to have a cistern. The only water we had was from very sparse rain in west Texas. The clay out there is red. So our clothes were red too... if there was enough to even wash. Sometimes we had to have a truck come out from town to fill it. I'm glad we don't live there anymore.

It's fun to go with you house hunting. Keep showing us what you find. Scout

Hi Scout, yesterday, after tearing round getting our present place ready for photographing, we drove for about two hours to see a place that sounded promising. You really would not want to see it. , told not to walk on carpets in shoes, I was concerned about my bare feet Smelled of cat poo and cigarettes, looked worse in bad repair doors off built ins, needed painting, etc etc. Real estate agents should be made to live in some of the houses they advertise!

Our next door neighbour has moved into a little clean lowset duplex brick home one of a group inside a high fence and automatic gate. Do not need the latter, but a similar place (It had a lock up garage I could use as a studio and a place to park our van) started to look attractive. Maybe I can still be a good artist without living in an "arty" looking place.

Of course you are a good artist without having to live in an arty looking place!

I saw many places like that when I was working. One had blood on the ceiling and holes that had been punched in walls and the landlord smiled and said, "I'd live here, wouldn't you?" Um....no. And I well know she wouldn't have either. Crazy.

Default Eight caricatures

In the middle of upheaval, life goes on. This may be my last commission in Toowoomba before we leave town. (We house-hunt again tommorrow)

These are all members of the same family. The mother gave me one or two word clues to in their interests and personalities. I will let you work out what I was aiming for.

Cheers

Those are good Des. I'm working at freehand drawing too. I'm getting better. Once you're past the fear, it's easier. Are you working from photos? My next step is life drawing. Something other than my sleeping husband.

I only just need my painting space to be artsy. Find a nice clean place. This is your time... not for cleaning others messes. Scout
