New Google page ranking!

Google ranks the importance of each and every page on the Internet. Rankings go from 0 to 10. Most sites rank in the 0 to 3 categories. A 5 is considered a very good ranking for an art site and Artspan has had that for the past few years. We are now ranked a 6, a category that places Artspan with sites such as those for Mass MOCA and the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art and other very important and relevant sites. A 6 page ranking is rare and is hard to get. Also, because Artspan is ranked highly, individual Artspan member sites are generally ranked well, usually with a 3. To see how your site is ranked go to to http://toolbar.google.com/ and install the Google toolbar. Then click on Options and check the box next to Page Ranking. That will install the Page Ranking classifier on the Toolbar and you will see how every site you visit ranks.

And now here is more good news...out of 16 million pages on Google for the term Original Artists, Artspan is #3; for original artwork, we are #9 and for original art #12 (out of 42 million results returned). This is of course in addition to the other good rankings we have let you know about in the past few months (such as #3 for Artists Websites on Google and #5 for Contemporary Art on MSN, etc). We are seeing a continuing improvement in all the search terms we have targeted.

An important part of our mission is to drive visitors to your sites. We will keep working to improve traffic.

Artspan Advertising

We continue to promote Artspan both through print media and through purchase of key words with Google and Yahoo. For example, we have a ½ page color ad in the 2005 Art in America annual which will come out this month. As our membership grows and with it the revenue, we are able to do more and more with our ad budget.

In the works: new site design and features

We are in the process of designing and implementing some new designs and options for your sites. Thanks to your suggestions, in the near future we will be adding a variety of templates that you can use to change the look of your site. The biggest changes will be to make your homepage more of an introductory page and not simply a gallery page. The artwork will be found in a portfolio section that will allow you to categorize work by subject or medium. More details to come…

The Importance of links on your site and on Artspan

Links are helpful when they are relevant to your site, that is, if they are art-related. They are especially useful if they have a good page ranking from Google. It is a good thing to pursue links actively and to respond to inquiries by placing links on your links page. The more highly-ranked sites you link to, the better your site will show up in search results. Its easy to create links. Go to your main admin page and click on Navigation Bar and then on the page that you use for links. If you don't have one, create one by clicking on Add a Link (page). To create a link, type in the link and then highlight it. Then click on the third icon from the right on the top toolbar line. A dialogue box will open up. Enter the entire URL of the link as follows: http://www.link.com

It's important to ONLY place links when they are relevant, other links will be of no use and may in fact lead to lower rankings with the search engines.

Artspan itself continues to rise in the rankings with the major search engines for terms that we deem the most important. For example, contemporary art, contemporary art gallery, online art gallery and artists websites.

We are in the process of redesigning the Artspan links pages. Currently, non-Artspan art sites in our database show in results pages that are dynamically generated. This will change as we move to Yahoo-type tree giving visitors a logical way to find specific art sites. The sites will be listed on those pages and search engines will count them as links, something that is not possible with dynamically generated links pages. All this is important for better rankings for us and our member sites.
