 Developments This Past Month

Thanks to the addition of the arrows to the right of the image in the Artworks page, it’s now easier to reorder your images. The double arrow allows you to make the image show first (or last) and the single arrow allows you to move the image up (or down) one place. Alternatively, if you go to the “Your Gallery” section and click “Edit,” you can change the order of the images by using the drop-down menu next to “Display Order.” We will program this function so that members can drag and drop, but not until we redo the image upload function. The latter needs to be reprogrammed for speed and for maximum image size. We will be making the image enlargement size larger also (for Theme B sites).

Other tech developments include the simplification of the Artspan application process. The domain registration has been integrated into it. It’s a lot easier for new members to sign up. We continue to (happily) extend a free month every time you refer a new member. We have also done a lot of work on the portals and there were upgrades to prior tech initiatives .
Personalize your site colors and fonts

This new option is now almost completed. Professional Plus members will be able to specify the colors and fonts for their sites. This will, however only apply to Theme B designs, for the moment. Please take a look at the Themes section for a view of Theme B.

We expect this enhancement to be in effect in the next few days.

 More for November

Caoimhin Barry, our tech lead, has promised us an exciting November. The customization feature is the big one, but we will also introduce faster and easier image upload and a better text editor. These two areas have been the source of a lot of member issues, and we are happy to finally address them.

Portals this Month

In September, we launched the Mixed Media, Glass Art, Landscape Painting, and Plein Air Portals. In October, we added Still Life, Botanical and Ceramics. We have also incorporated some changes in the presentation of the information and in the programming. We will address the issue of more member images showing in the featured images rotations on the Portals, but we need to do this in conjunction with the reprogramming of the search functions. Right now, all members have one thumbnail that serves to represent their work. In the future, members will be able to specify one image for each category/subcategory in which they work that will then be added to the Portals featured member rotation.

We are looking for more content for the Portals. We would be very happy to consider any articles you have written or would consider writing for both the Articles section and the Portals. Please email Laura at portals@artspan.com with any other thoughts regarding resources that you feel are missing or ways in which you feel the portals might be improved. We need your help to make these Portals truly relevant, rich in content, and a compelling destination for members of the art community.

  Domain Registration Matters

We no longer use Its Your Domain as our primary registrar. We are now handling that in-house. We found that the service level from IYD did not meet our needs. Our registration prices have all gone down by approximately 13% for new registrations and slightly less for renewals (14.89 for renewals and 13.89 for multi-year renewals). Most of you will still have your domains registered with “Its Your Domain” and you will still be able to manage them through your Admin. If you want to transfer over to us, please log in to your admin and click on “Manage Domain.” The cost to transfer is $12.58 and will include an extra year of registration.

 New Pricing for January

Professional Plus sites will go to $19.95 per month in January. Features that ProPlus sites will have that the other sites don’t have are: ability to choose colors and fonts, preference in featured member placement on portals pages, unlimited images, and bigger image enlargements. We are working on the video and blog options and they will be added to the Pro Plus sites, but may not be ready by January.

We will increase pricing for Professional Sites to 17.95/month. The number of images will increase from 18 to 24. If you are a Pro Plus member and want the price to stay at 17.95/month, go to your admin in December and click on “About You.” Then change member type from Professional Plus to Professional.

The introductory or Basic membership will cost 13.95 and the Associate Membership with Hosting will increase to $9.95.

We very sincerely regret the need to increase the prices. With current pricing, we simply do not have the resources to expand the site (and its content and visibility) as well as to improve the functionality of the member sites. You will remember all that we have done this past year to improve your sites and to expand Artspan as a destination for collectors, dealers, and other arts enthusiasts. For the individual sites, upgrades include the Home Page, the Galleries, new designs, the slideshow option and a lot more. We have more planned for next year. For the site as a whole, the Artspan Portals are an initiative that will need constant updating and revision if we are to serve as a serious resource and attract more traffic through to your sites.

This is our second price increase in 8 years and the cost of membership is still far less than that of our major competitors. Take a look at Big Black Bag, Foliolink, Foliosnap, and FineArtStudioOnline. Their top packages average $40-50/month; we are still below $20 (with 10% annual discount). No other provider of template websites is a comparable art portal or attracts nearly as much traffic as Artspan does.

All of the expansions and improvements that we are making are done with the sole purpose of better serving you, our members. We hope you will understand that they are done at a cost and will appreciate the advances we have made. Please contact us with any other ideas you may have to enhance the site and better serve you and your work. Thank you for your loyal support; we at Artspan are working hard to make Artspan.com and your artist sites the best that they can be.

Contemporary Paintings in Oil

“I react to the paint on the canvas and answer with the next series of marks, color, texture. The questions and answers begin to layer themselves while creating an echo of the landscape. This call and response becomes the image itself as I begin to see the possibilities of spatial depth forming. …in my paintings, the concept is the paint and vice versa.”
