  Keep Your Site Live

We are moving to new servers. With the new sites, extra traffic and new features coming, this was something that could not be postponed. We have had a team working on this for three months and are almost ready for the final move.

A big problem is the need to change the Domain Name Servers (DNS or NS) that are associated with the member domain names. Having the correct Name Servers allows anyone typing your domain name in their browser window to come to our (new) server and pull up your site.

We have been able to make the necessary DNS changes for many but not all member sites and for no domains that were NOT registered through Artspan.

So, If your domain was registered with a company (registrar) that was not Artspan, we need you to log in to your account on your registrar’s website and then change your DNS (Domain Name Server).

Again, we have been able to automatically change a lot of the domains, but if your DNS has not been changed, then it is currently:
ns1v.datapipe.net (or ns.datapipe.net)
ns2v.datapipe.net (or ns.datapipe.net)

This is the old DNS which which has to be changed. If you want to check to see what your current DNS is, go to http://www.networksolutions.com/whois/index.jsp and type in your domain name to see what your current DNS is (scroll down until you see “Domain servers in listed order”). You can also check to see who your registrar is, if you have forgotten.

Please log in to your currrent domain registrar and change your DNS to:
ns1.artspan.com
ns2.artspan.com
ns3.artspan.com
ns4.artspan.com
ns5.artspan.com

How do you change it?
Here is a list of most of the major registrars’ login pages. Chances are good, that your domain registrar is listed here. Once you have logged in, look for something that says something like “Manage DNS” or “Change Name Servers” or “Manage Domain” or simply click on your domain name link in the page that appears. If you have tried to do change the DNS and are not able to do so, use their phone number to get help.

Once the server move and reconfiguration is done, we will finish the work on the prints-on-demand feature (a lot of the programming has been done), the new templates (which have been coded) and other enhancements and new features. We regret the delay on these – it could not be helped as we have to complete the server migration and that is a big job.

One thing that will help is that we are adding to our tech team. We are very happy to announce that Rodney Oliver has rejoined us on a full-time basis. He is very familiar with the programming behind Artspan backend. Not surprising as he designed a lot of it.

Website Management Tip: Click through from your Homepage

Most of you realize that it is fairly easy to add an image to your homepage (see here for details http://www.artspan.com/newsletter/artspan_news_February09.htm#item5).

Here is one other thing you can do that will make it easier for visitors to navigate your site…make that image a link to your main gallery page.

  • In the website pages section, click on Edit for the Home page.
  • If you haven’t already, then add an image. See http://www.artspan.com/newsletter/artspan_news_Apr09.htm#item2
  • Click on the image to “highlight” it.
  • Click on the “Insert/Edit a Link” icon below the text field (top row: 5 th from the right).
  • Enter page URL you want to link to. This will probably be your main gallery menu page and the URL will be http://www.YourWebsite.com/index.php
Click save.

Problems with Galleries? One Thing You Can Do

Here is a tip from Jodi Walsh on dealing with galleries where you may have run into problems (Jodi is a noted artist consultant. For more on her valuable services to artists, please see www.jodiart.com)

"If an artist has a problem with a gallery such as no payment, damaged work, etc., the artist should report the gallery to the Better Business Bureau. Artists should also check with the Better Business Bureau before signing a contract. Fortunately issues with galleries don’t come up every day, but when they do, this is one way to protect our work and interests. Over the years I have recommended this to 1000's of artists and it really works.”

This is, of course, only applicable to the US. I would love to hear from members outside the US on how they deal with issues confronting artists and am happy to extend a month’s hosting as a thank-you for anything we publish in this newsletter. Send me a message.

A poet and an artist who works in fabric, paint, photography and more.
Here is what he says regarding the materials used for one series, Absence of the Wearer, “ I work with memories and materials (clothing, acrylic, insulation foam, etc.) like a gardener sifting compost, planting seeds, and watering.” See Family Portrait above, from that series.

Commenting on another series, Why is there Anything?, he says, “ Notions of origins and boundaries of the universe typically fall back on either parochialism or mythology, as if to avoid the pain of an unfathomable landscape. In these crumpled photos, I reach behind the picture to remove its edge.”

Joyce D'Amore

Photography

A native of Brazil, he see his photographs as a celebration of life in all its facets.

“When I am photographing, my feelings overtake my sense of reason and rationale. I become fascinated by the subject, the lighting, the movement or lack of it; the whole process becomes intuitive, and the composition falls into place.

I never anticipate any specific reaction on the viewer's part. I leave that to each individual, according to his or her state of mind at the moment."
