Palm Afternoon


Many scenes like this have been painted by artists who are drawn to coastal areas. I tried to make mine different by making it very textural. If the sun is captured at just the right angle, deep shadows form in the underbrush of tropical flora while highlights hit the tops of the palms and mangroves. This creates the tension for a good painting. Layers of paint on the palm tree make it the focal point. The heavily layered paint on the sand and seaweed gives texture to the foreground. The painting has a slightly impressionistic style to represent a natural, tropical landscape. Original Oil on masonite.
