My Ozark Winter

Description

My first public school teaching job was in the tiny Ozark mountain town of Bakersfield, Missouri. There I rented a mobile home on a dirt road in the middle of Max and Elaine Vaughan's cattle pasture. As it turned out, we had one of the snowiest winters ever and school was canceled for twenty days. I was pretty much stuck in the mobile home for a month. As it also turned out, it was the winter of my greatest loss. To survive and keep busy I made a quilt from fabric remnants - old jeans, leftover curtain material. Forty years later I still take naps beneath this quilt. Each year I patch the frayed edges. It is soft with age and speaks to me of survival.
