Chasing Autumn

I have always hated hot, sticky weather. As a kid in south Louisiana, I couldn't wait until Autumn got there, which usually was around Thanksgiving. There would always be one or two cool days in October to tease you, but they weren't for real. By the time I could read, I thought that the writers must have had great imaginations, because the children in the readers ran & played in the colorful leaves. In Louisiana they were green, then they were brown. By the time I was 12, I had figured out that Fall was God's gift to Southerners for having survived the Summer. One of the best things about Fall was my dad burning the leaves he had raked. It would smell great, I would have on a sweater, & I'd run around, trying to escape the smoke, but it would follow me. Sweet memory. This painting represents that autumn bonfire, with the smoke drifting around. I love Autumn. I now live in the Blue Ridge Mountains of NC where the leaves REALLY do turn colors & by my birthday in mid-October, the weather is gloriously cool and the mountains are flaming reds, oranges, & golds. Yep, it's Paradise. :) Private collection of the artist. NFS
