After Midnight at La Libertad

A Memory: Surfing La Libertad, El Salvador, Cemetery, 1976. Acrylic on canvas 2013

Traveling Central America looking for waves. Arrived
at La Libertad and made friends with this guy Chris
from Santa Barbara. We decided to surf really early
next day. Chris comes by and wakes me up, I grab
my board and we head to the rock-beach
to wait for the sunrise. To get to the beach we had
to transverse this old cemetery. It was pitch dark
and could not see the path. We kept bumping into
raised tombs and there were strange noises of
unknown origin coming from the dark. Eventually,
we got to the beach and sat down to wait for the
sunrise. We waited, and waited but there was no
sunrise. It turned out that it was only 1 am.
It's still funny 45 years later.
