The Coal Grendel

Description

Mixed Media on Archival Clay Board in a Black Metal Floater Frame.
This painting is part of my Ecological Landscape series.

Based on my experiences around open pit mining, I used the German Garzweiler mine as my source of inspiration. Historically, mining is a temporary activity. The operating life of a mine lasts anywhere from a few years to several decades. Years ago a Wyoming rancher told me that he would never open his land to open pit mining because there is no returning the land to its original form underground.
