DD072315 Nocturne

Acrylic on Canvas 2015 DD072315 Nocturne began with a very light color palette but as it evolved it did a radical about-face resulting in the dark painting seen here. The curved forms painted in various tones of black are scaled differently which causes a sense of depth while also remaining flat much like the graphic nature of Japanese woodcuts which are a great source of inspiration for me. I began to associate the depth and darkness of the work with landscape painting and it kept evoking Whistler's famous nocturnes, hence the title. Ad Reinhardt and Richard Serra were also very much on my mind during the execution this piece. The light from the thicker teal lines seems to emanate from within whereas the thin ones sit on top of the surface of the painting which suggests both natural and synthetic light sources.
