This is a watercolor of lilacs on the Eastern Promenade in Portland, Maine. I am influenced by John Singer Sargent and Winslow Homer's watercolor paintings. Both artists' paintings have a rich fluid feel to them. They capture brilliant light. These are goals for my watercolors. Casco Bay provided a beautiful blue backdrop to the fresh lilacs. The watercolor medium allows me to record the fleeting afternoon light on a spring afternoon. This painting gives us a feeling of relaxation as we look out over Casco Bay.
