Fierce Focus
When I began this graphite drawing, I viewed the Sumatran tiger as a wild and powerful predator with fierce focus, hence the name. Then I learned that its species is critically endangered due to poaching and deforestation, and less than 400 remain in the wild.
My heart grew heavy for this magnificent animal, and the drawing took on a new level of purpose as I began seeing the tiger’s intense expression as a plea for help. I hope this portrait evokes not only a sense of awe and intimidation in viewers but also of compassion that sparks a desire to help this species as it fights for survival.
I drew the tiger’s face and body first, layer by layer, pouring my heart and soul onto the paper to bring this striped beauty to life. I then used my darkest pencils to add the background’s black contrast and leaves native to the Sumatran rainforests. I spent 50 hours on this 11x14-inch graphite drawing on white paper in April 2024.
