Archival pigment print Each print individually hand colored Edition of 6 Sally Stockhold © 2010 Simone de Beauvoir 1908 - 1986 Jean-Paul Sartre 1905 - 1980 Beauvoir was a renowned French writer, existentialist philosopher, feminist, Marxist and social Theorist. She is also noted for her lifelong polyamorous relationship with Jean-Paul Sartre. Her private life came to be admired nearly as much as her work. She chose to never marry and did not set up a joint household with Sartre, their relationship being as complex as it was controversial for the time. They did not hesitate to take other lovers during their years together. However, Beauvoir and Sartre made a vow, and kept it, to share all the intimate details of their time spent with others. Beauvoir became famous after publishing her feminist treatise, “The Second Sex” in 1949. “One is not born a woman, but becomes one.” Simone de Beauvoir
