6" square Polarbear and Seal art tile. The depiction of the ribs in red and stomach in orange is part of the X-ray style where the insides of animals are shown. The style is common in the Western and Northern coastal areas of Alaska. Each tile is made from the glacial clay collected from Anchorage mud flats. The clay slabs are impressed with cut out designs on a matboard plate. The raised lines are waxed to help keep the glaze colors separate. Each tile is fired two to three times in oxidation up to cone 6, or 2150 degrees Fahrenheit. The tile is good even outdoors and will withstand extremes in weather, or will look beautiful hung on the wall inside. They are awesome gifts.
