Castle Stories

I spend a few months a year in the French Pyrenees mountains, surrounded by the ruins of castles from 1000 years ago.

What happens to my sense of self when I’m immersed in these places?

Psychologist James Hillman said that our sense of self not only expands to the future with the children or creative works that we leave behind. But our sense of Self is also extended to the past when we find a deep connection to ancient places, to history.

The sense of myself residing in, deeply connected to, and empathic with an era of Time extends both to the future and the past. This richly extends the sense of self to inhabit times and places that my physical body will not.

This piece reminds me of that expansion, and the wider sense of empathy and aliveness it invites. What makes you feel that way?
