Eight years ago I was living in Washington state, near the Columbia river. It was then that I decided I needed to put my focus on one art form and do my best to master it. I've always loved the longevity of metal, so I decided to sculpt and have my work produced in bronze. I soon learned there was a bronze foundry across the river in Cascade Locks, Oregon.
I have a deep affinity for animals, I find a well of inspiration among the birds, mammals and reptiles. I am enthusiastic about choosing my subjects from such a diverse group and learning about them.
I earned my BFA in sculpture from the Kansas City Art Institute. As a wildlife sculptor who produces limited edition bronzes, my concern is for texture, shape and scale. For the past six years I have also been painting. This art form presents me with a whole new challenge, mixing and contrasting colors. In painting, I am throwing out some ideas that I was taught, about placing the subject on a neutral background. Nature is chaotic and patterns collide. Sometimes complimenting and contrasting, but often concealing the subject. In these works I am inlaying the spaces with patterns. I plan to extend this into the birds and into the background. Being in nature, brings me to the present moment, as does the art making. And that's right where I want to be.
