JC McCarthy (nee Winkley) is a self-taught artist whose hometown is El Paso, Texas. In 1990 she moved into a small brick building, formerly a brothel, on the edge of the U.S.-Mexican border where her work was informed by the light and shadow of the Chihuahuan Desert, the outlaw dust of the border town and the desert stones with lines and colors that resembled the petrified organs of some ancient creature. Currently, she lives and works in Santa Fe, NM.

"This web of time - the strands of which approach one another, bifurcate, intersect or ignore each other through the centuries - embraces every possibility. We do not exist in most of them. In some you exist and not I, while in others I do, and you do not...
I imagined a labyrinth of labyrinths, a maze of mazes, a twisting, turning, ever-widening labyrinth that contained both past and future and somehow implied the stars."
- Jorge Luis Borges, The Garden of Forking Paths
