Is the beautiful mermaid a temptress, using her powers to divert a distressed vessel from safe waters? Is the floundering ship confused between the gleam of her rainbow and the illumination of the light house warning? Or is the mermaid trying unsuccessfully to alert the ship's crew to the dangers just before them? What does her expression suggest to you?
This portrait was inspired by a photo of Jenna O'Connor, as she relaxed backstage after her performance as the Wicked Witch in her school's production of "The Wizard of Oz". Her skin had been painted green to produce a ghastly effect but instead it lent to her an eerie enchantment.
