Joseph P McGlon interest in working in pastels and oil paint came late in life. He enjoyed visiting various art museum, but had no idea that he would become an artist, until a colleague saw his stick figures at work. Joseph didn't know that his colleague was an artist and ask if she could take his stick figures to an informal art class, that she and others were attending. After returning from her art class, the instructor ask her to invite him to attend the art class. Not only did he attend the art class, but utilized other teaching methods such as instructional DVDS and online art classes. He was lead to attend artist Phil Davies online class, which helped improve his drawing and painting skills. His paintings have been influenced by 19th Century Art Movement, known as Impressionism. His depiction of light, thin, small, and broad strokes can be seen in his paintings. His use of gradation in his bold colors evokes emotions, atmosphere, rhythm and enhances a meaning.
Joseph is married and currently lives in Midwest City, Oklahoma. After completing his military service, which included deploying to Vietnam, he returned to Oklahoma City to pursue his education. He holds a Master's Degree in Clinical Social Work from the University of Kansas and a BA Degree from the Historical Black College of Langston University, Langston, Oklahoma. Mr. McGlon retired from the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, where he evaluated Veterans for Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and other behavioral issues. He credits his experience in counseling Veterans as the driving force that leads to his artistic discovery and journey.
