Patty Neal was born and raised in San Mateo, Calif. Art was a passion of hers from an early age. Her mother was a painter and she learned about oil paints early on by watching her, posing for her, painting with her and accompanying her, on occasion, to art classes.
Patty is a self-taught artist.
She moved to NYC in 1975 and for many years earned a living doing art production at the Village Voice, Rolling Stone and Esquire Magazine. She also did illustrations at the Village Voice and Savvy Magazine. During this time she also studied modern dance with Mercy Cunningham and performed with a few professional dance companies over a six year period. She continued painting through these years..
Patty moved to San Francisco in 1987, with her husband and young daughter. She got a studio at Hunters Point Naval Shipyard where she painted and showed her work for 22 years. She developed a group of devoted collectors at the Shipyard's Open Studios held twice a year. However, she had always missed NYC's vibrancy and was able to move back in 2009. Her studio is in her home in Brooklyn, NY. She has been showing at the Carrie Haddad Gallery in Hudson, NY, since 2011. Her paintings are in numerous collections in the US and Europe.
