On 16 September 2022, 22-year-old Kurdish-Iranian woman Mahsa Amini died in a hospital after being violently arrested and beaten by the morality officers. When the news of ICE arresting and detaining young activists and innocent college-age foreign students kept coming, I was reminded of Mahsa's incident. When it happened, it was in a faraway country of which I have little knowledge, and I thought incidents like that would not happen in the US. But these days, things are very different here. The painting is not just about Mahsa Amini, but about young women here in the US who have to continue fighting for their rights and freedom.
