Inspired by my observations among mountains and Buddhist monasteries (Tibetan regions of China and the Himalaya of far north India). The scale, texture, color contrast and imposing ruggedness of the monastery walls and ruins- fantastic. I wanted to bring forth some sense of this on paper and canvas.
I balanced a bit of detailed architectural line work around the window frames, with the more fluid, bold application of color. This was done with charcoal and pigment ink around the windows. For the wall areas, I used watercolor washes, gesso, and a limited amount of acrylic ink for some of the darker blue hues.
