GAMBLING WITH THE QUEEN

This painting stages a surreal confrontation between authority and chance. A bird-headed figure (Sebald – the Duck), dressed in regal attire with a crown and formal suit, sits enthroned and holds playing cards, embodying both monarch and gambler. Behind him, the faint, ghostlike image of a queen from a deck of cards emerges, her gaze directed outward while clutching her own hand of cards. The letter “Q” in the upper corner further ties the composition to the iconography of playing cards.
Rendered in warm tones of red, orange, and gold against shadowed depths, the work contrasts solidity with translucence, power with uncertainty. The hybrid forms, theatrical light, and layered imagery evoke themes of hierarchy, deception, and the precarious balance of fortune.
