The Guardians

The Guardians
2007
36 x 24 / #2
This canvas was started several years ago and never quite seemed right. It was not until I simplified the background and decided to include a penguin that the whole idea clicked for me. The premise is based on global warming. If all the ice caps melt, where will the poor penguins go? The seagulls are defending their turf from the invading forces of tuxedo-clad squatters with maps in hand. Other protective references include the 2 women, my original idea to have them be Mom’s watching children at the beach though I found that rather boring. One bird watches a crab stealing a cigarette butt, another is on the lookout for anything of interest, a few enjoy a day in the surf and one checks out his own image. Nobody ever said seagulls were bright. One of the figures had best guard her own attire as well. I have no idea what the tattoo symbols mean. I found them on a gift bag in my studio so I figured they could not be too offensive, however, I could be wrong. Our local Walmart does not have many Asian speaking patrons.
