Artist's Insights:
Q. You have used "The Fifer (after Manet)" before. This time he's standing in front of a green board of what looks like calculus equations. What caused you to go back to him?

A. I loved the shapes of the symbols, letters, and numbers on the green board and I wanted to feature this uniform collection of handwritten markings that not too many people can read. The fifer does not seem to interfere. His shirt picks up the white of the marks but the color green is not repeated. Yet he was my best choice for a pairing. I might defend my choice by saying that he has no idea about higher math either!
