Koyasan

When my husband went to work as a physicist at KEK I went along and travelled to Koyasan, a Buddhist temple city in the mountains near Osaka. The three panels in the middle represent memorials at Okunoin cemetery, framed by lanterns and gorin- tō ( ve-ringed towers), the rings standing for earth, water, re, wind/air and space (bottom to top). Here they are painted bluish over a black background like at night, as spirits roam the cemetery to nd eternal rest. The panels are mounted on a red board, symbolizing the red head coverings and bibs some stone memorials wear protecting them from evil.
