Eternal Memory

Oil and Acrylic on Panel

This piece was inspired by my favorite poem, The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe. A man in Victorian London is plagued by an ebony creature reminding him that his grief for his lost love is endless. Poe uses the raven to symbolize memory, an attribute commonly associated with corvids. Other prime examples are Odin’s famous ravens from Norse mythology, Huginn and Muninn. Every day they flew around the world, gathering wisdom and knowledge. Upon their return, Odin assimilated their thoughts and memories earning him the moniker the All Father. In my portrayal, these curious and incredibly intelligent birds hover at the edges of portals through time and space where they can amass stores of knowledge so great that the past, present, and future coalesce.
