The vibrant Hemstitch Purple Iris comes to life in this large-scale watercolor, painted with professional-grade materials to capture the beauty and grace of this elegant bloom. Its sweeping petals and striking color command attention—making it a stunning centerpiece for any space.

About the Iris:
Symbolizing hope, wisdom, trust, and valor, the iris is a powerful flower both visually and symbolically. Historically linked to nobility, especially in France and Italy, its royal presence has graced art, emblems, and royal gardens for centuries.

Color symbolism adds depth to its meaning:

Purple – Royalty & wisdom

Yellow – Passion

Blue – Faith & hope

White – Purity

The iris is more than just beautiful. In herbal medicine, its roots were once used in cough syrups and topical remedies, and even added to perfumes to lend a distinct, memorable fragrance—ranging from orange blossom to grape soda, and even chocolate.

Among iris enthusiasts, bearded irises are grouped by height and bloom time:

Miniature Dwarf Bearded (MDB)

Standard Dwarf Bearded (SDB)

Intermediate Bearded (IB)

Miniature Tall Bearded (MTB)

Border Bearded (BB)

Tall Bearded (TB)

My Iris Story:
Growing up in Illinois, school would end in early June—right when the irises were in full bloom. I remember cutting a few tall stems, wrapping them in damp paper towels and foil, and gifting them to my elementary school teacher. I didn’t realize their fragility or value—just that they were stunning, and I wanted to share them.

Even now, I adore spotting irises on my walks. The range of colors, the way people position them along sidewalks or tucked in garden beds—I always lean in for a deep sniff. There’s nothing like it. This painting is a tribute to that joy, nostalgia, and the timeless elegance of the iris.
