According to Freud, the "ego" is the portion of the psyche that mediates between our instinctual, primitive desires and our moral conscience. Our perception of self is based largely on how well we think our ego is tiptoeing along that line. Even this self image is constantly in flux, changing over time as we gain experience. What would happen if we allowed our moral filter to erode altogether? Would we flourish in the resulting freedom from morality? Or would a life of impulse and instant gratification be our downfall? The natural world provides the means to truly know and heal ourselves so readily. Why do we resist its pull?
