Stepping Out by Kathi Dugan

An inquisitive and assertive toddler, dressed in red, steps from the dimly lit interior of her brick home, into the golden sunshine of a blooming garden.
The story behind the picture:
The photo which inspired the painting was of my niece. It was the day of my father's wake in Miami. He was to be buried at a later date in Quantico National Cemetery, Virginia. Meanwhile, busy preparations were underhand in the kitchen toward for serving a large family meal. Jacqueline slipped out unnoticed through the glass sliding door onto the pool patio. I caught a quick shot of her as she came through. It was the expression she gave me that arrested me and spurred me to paint her image. For her portrait, I changed up her deep brown velvet gown into the red dress she is now wearing.
