White Lily of the Valley

White Lily of the Valley
You can almost smell the fabulous fragrance in this vibrant White Lily of the Valley watercolor. Bring the outdoors in and grace your favorite wall with these lovely, delicate flowers.

Fun Lily of the Valley Facts:

Said to bring luck in love, purity, joy, sincerity, happiness, and good fortune.

Finland’s national flower.

Leaves are harvested for green pigment.

A member of the asparagus family.

Its lovely and distinct fragrance is widely used in perfumes.

Though delicate and beautiful, the plant is poisonous if ingested, causing symptoms like abdominal pain, blurred vision, drowsiness, and reduced heart rate.

Historically used during WWI to combat gas poisoning; ingested as treatment for heart disorders and epilepsy; topically for skin burns.

I have always loved the scent of Lily of the Valley—you can smell it long before you see it. As a child, I was warned it could be deadly if eaten, and I wondered why anyone would try. What could possibly be tasty about such a delicate bloom? This warning sometimes seemed to spark mischief in children, searching for these mysterious flowers.

Though my childhood farm never had Lily of the Valley, several friends’ yards did. To me, it was a carefully chosen landscaping treasure—a flower so precious and desirable, those yards seemed lucky, even rich.
